Special Edition Saturday

"Wow two blogs in one day? What's going on JD?"

These may be some of the questions that you, gentle reader, may be asking yourself.

Well I have a special guest with me today, my very good friend and sorority sister Amanda!

Since she is an avid reader of my blog (much thanks by the way!) I decided to do another blog with her added commentary on the movie! And since she is my special guest I let her pick the movie and the winner is:

Now I had started watching this movie originally when I was on vacation up North with my friend Nicole but due to poor internet connection and Netflix being a bitch, we were unable to finish it.

Released in 2012 and directed by Drew Goddard and written by the wonderfully talented Joss Whedon  this movie stars Chris Hemsworth (THOR!), Kristen Connoly,  and Jesse Williams (Grey's Anatomy).

So I asked Amanda why she chose this movie, "as you see through it (the movie), it flips the genre on its head. It takes the archetypes, the stoner, the shy girl, the blonde "slut", the black guy/minority, and the jock, and it takes them and turns it into something meaningful."

Now if you have never seen this movie and decided to give it a shot, don't worry. Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard made the beginning in such a way to confuse people into thinking that they walked into the wrong movie. Very sneaky Mr. Whedon.

Off the bat this movie seems to be a combination of every typical teen horror movie mixed with The Hunger Games. Add in some taxidermy make out session too. Or perhaps it is just a very obscure remake of The Evil Dead.

In the basement is how they decide to die (unintentionally of course) and they do this by the various items they touch and play with. Hence all the crap, and all the hub-bub about the conch shell. Sorry Hadley, no mermaids this time. -wink-

"Why is it that people don't go for the head? That bothers me, it's always a 'for sure'." Amanda stated during one of the basement scenes. And I would have to totally agree, always go for the decapitation whenever possible.

One thing I love about watching movies with friends is the commentary. Yes I am one of those horrible movie talkers. So of course when Hemsworth tries to make the jump I say, "Not even Thors' hammer could help you here buddy."

There is a buffet of gore to be had in this movie as well as a wonderful side dish of humor. And the best thing is, you're not waiting half the movie for the gore to start!

One of the things I love about this movie is that yes, it is a gory horror movie, but it is also so much more than that. The whole aspect of someone controlling the environment of what is going on makes it so interesting to watch.  Also all the nods to other horror movies, like The Evil Dead, Hellraiser, Resident Evil, plus any movie you can think of that is referenced during the elevator scene.

My favorite scene by far is the elevator scene. I won't say much because I do not want to give everything away, but I will mention two things: 1) Look for the purple people eater in the top left corner and 2) there is a deadly unicorn.

Bazinga.

Amanda's parting words: "I just think it's great that it's a horror movie with a unicorn in it. How often do you see that? I mean it's also written by Joss Wheadon, how can you NOT like it?"

One of my biggest selling points is that Nine Inch Nails is on the soundtrack (during the ending credits) and NIN is one of my favorite bands of all time.

So where does that leave us?

According the IMDB this movie won five 2012 Fright Meter Awards including Best Horror Movie, Best Screenplay, and Best Director.

IMDB Rates this movie a 7.1 out of 10 stars. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 92% with a  73% audience approval.  I am giving this 5 out of 5 skulls. It really does live up to the hype and I hope you will agree if you see this movie.

  1. I loved this movie when I saw it. At first I really hated it though until I caught on to what was happening. Suddenly it goes from a cliche, generic horror movie to a smart and fun movie watching experience. Good choice!

  2. I never wanted to see this movie based on the trailer. It wasn't until we actually rented it that I liked it :)
